Blue Sunset- Smoke in the Air

Due to the smoke making its way east from the historic wildfires on the West Coast, we have had some interesting skies here in Southeast Pennsylvania the last few days. This was from the evening of September 16th. Strangely enough, the world appeared to be bathed in the red glow of a sunset in late afternoon, and right before the actual time of sunset, the sky had a noticeable blue tone to it, strange when the red sun is still visible above the horizon. Smokey Sun Setting

Due to the smoke making its way east from the historic wildfires on the West Coast, we have had some interesting skies here in Southeast Pennsylvania the last few days. This was from the evening of September 16th. Strangely enough, the world appeared to be bathed in the red glow of a sunset in late afternoon, and by the actual time of sunset, the sky was dark enough to get shots of the sun without any special filters. You can see the banding of the smoke across the sun, giving it a layered effect similar to Jupiter’s clouds. Tyler State Park, PA-US

Mammatus Clouds

Mammatus clouds are pouch-like protrusions hanging from the undersides of clouds, usually thunderstorm anvil clouds but other types of clouds as well. Composed primarily of ice, these cloud pouches can extend hundreds of miles in any direction, remaining visible in your sky for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes at a time.

A small, yet very powerful storm blew through in under five minutes last spring, with intense lightning and wind. Within twenty minutes of the first rain, this was the sight of the storm rolling east. You could here the thunder as the storm caught the beginning of the sunset. Atmospherics

Milky Way Rising

The Milky Way begins its nightly trip through the sky. Shot in the small town of Afton, Wyoming-US, which is part of the aptly named Star Valley. You can see the galaxy with impressive detail with the naked eye.

Smiling Skies

A rainbow, or a circumzenithal arc, showing the spectrum of colors in high altitude cirrus clouds in the blue sky. Never saw one before!

Fire Cloud

A strange looking cloud is lit up like fire at sunset in my neighborhood last night. It kind of looked like the incoming alien ships in Independence Day, wherer they lit the sky on fire. I have some other good shots to play with, but this is more of a straight up context photo showing the house next door and surroundings. Newtown, PA-US
