Leopard Frog Hiding Among the Autumn Leaves

This was an unexpected find. A Leopard frog trying to hide in the fallen leaves on an unseasonably warm autumn day. A lot of frogs, snakes and bugs were on the trail, mixed in with the fall leaves. Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, Bucks County, PA

Timid Curiosity

Cold day with little sun kept most of the sheep in the shelter, but our presence was too much of a curiosity for them to resist. This was the first sheep to come out and start looking us over.

Low Earth Orbit

Jellyfish or sea jellies in a line catch some light and glow underwater, with motes of dust resembling stars.

Red Eastern Box Turtle

A vividly red colored male Eastern Box Turtle allowed me a closeup before disappearing into the grass. This is the brightest red I have ever seen on a box turtle, and he really stood out as he was carefully crossing the path. Windlestrae Park, North Wales, PA.

Frog Suffering a Mosquito

You know it's a weird year when you capture the moment that a suicidal mosquito bites a frog right above its mouth. I didn't even see this until I brought the photo in for processing, and I couldn't believe my eyes. Apparently mosquitos will do this, though they likely prefer the safer option of warm blood from a creature who doesn't feast on them. Churchville Nature Center, Churchville, PA-US

Dark-Eyed Junco in Snow

A small Dark-eyed Junco, also known as a snowbird, waits its turn to get some seed from the feeder on a snowy day. The day before was sixty degrees, and so goes modern day winters in Pennsylvania. Newtown, Bucks County, PA-US.

On the Prowl

A large fox patrols the suburbs, catching some winter sun. This one is new in the neighborhood, after the previous fox met an untimely end by being run over by a car. Many foxes die this way where I live. Pennsylvania-USA.

Baby Box Turtle

A very recently hatched Eastern Box turtle walks along a paved path. I thought it was a child's toy at first! The notch on its 'nose' apparently is an egg tooth, used to break out of the shell, and it can disappear after a few hours to a day or two after hatching. I moved it off to the side and thankfully, being a rainy day, the path was not being utilized much. Power Line Trail, Horsham PA-US

Snail's Pace

After looking for years, I finally ran into my first tiny snail in the wild. Funny thing is I found about twenty this day, which seems to be the way I always find that thing I have been on the look out for when shooting. Horsham Powerline Trail, Horsham PA-US.

Cormorant Drying Off

A double crested Cormorant dries its wings after diving for fish in Neshaminy Creek, in Tyler State Park. This one disappeared under the water and travelled about thirty feet before resurfacing. It didn't catch any fish, but put on a nice show as the sun disappered behind the tree lineon a warm summer evening. Newtown, PA-US

Squirrel's Autumn Acorn

A squirrel snacks on an acorn during an overcast Autumn day. With the trees now nearly bare, the squirrels compete with one another for food; spying on one another as they hide their food stash, and marking the site for future raiding. They even pretend to hide food in one site while another squirrel watches, and bury it somewhere else when the spy leaves. Tyler State Park, Newtown PA-US

Garter Snake Ready To Shed

A garter snake hangs out on a branch a few feet off of the ground, looking ready to shed its skin. The cloudy and blue shaded eyes are a dead give away since that is a normal part of a snake's shedding process. I grabbed a few shots then let it be, since the snake seemed vulnerable and uncomfortable with the attention. Shot at Tyler State Park, Bucks County, PA.

Green Frog Poised to Leap

This green frog was poised to leap into the nearby pond, but allowed me to get very close before doing so. If you approach them slowly, they seem to think freezing in place is the best option, giving an opportunity for some good closeup shots. Churchville Nature Center, Churchville, Bucks County, PA-US.

Puffed and Tough- Red-winged Blackbird

A red-winged blackbird owns his portion of the pond. Dozens of rivals fly around threatening to challenge his authority, but none impressed him enough to back down. Frog Days of Spring

Reflective Goose

A Canada goose (branta canadensis) swims through the Delaware Canal, leaving a beautiful reflective wake on the surface of the water behind it. Though I am certain it is looking into the water for food, it appears to be having a reflective moment pondering whatever a goose might think about. Many geese with a few goslings were out and about on the canal on this sunny spring day. Most of the geese weren't particularly interested in us visitors being there.
